Somewhere, in some language, there must be a word with no definition, except that it is worse than anything you compare it to, an infinite insult. I challenge anyone who reads this to find such a word.

The term "hobo" is first attested in 1889 three years before Walt Whitman's death. It means, according to consensus, vagabond, in the sense of someone who is homeless and wanders from place to place in search of employment. It came into common usage in the Great Depression when some newspapers were inclined to refer to the unemployed, rather unfairly, as bums. At that time it was associated with riding freight trains, which was the most practical means of transport for vagabonds. The word is often used perjoratively, like tramp in British English. The English tramps were exactly the same unemployed people from exactly the same economic depression.
To call Whitman a hobo is metaphorical and "romantic." He seemed to live a peripatetic life which was, to some extent, idealized by the Beat poets.
