The oldest recorded chain letter was sent in Dec of 1888, according to Snopes.com. I still remember my fear, waiting for disaster to fall after I threw away a chain letter that I received in the mail with no return address in the 1950s. So far I’m okay.

People in general are superstitious. Psychologically they can happily harbor hopes of unearned wealth which they would dismiss if they thought in the least bit rationally about the likelihood of it.
It’s the same impulse that has people buying lottery tickets.

Thanks for the reasearch.

But, I admire how this word LUCK influences people. People are ready to become rich without effort. How funny? When you get something that you do not deserve, it is not yours, someone else’s. Like one friend says, when money can’t buy happiness, why should I forward this junk for Money?

I really like the Chinese proverb and believe without those cautionary slides the chain would go even farther. I would have sent this mail at least to my close friends if those cautionary slides were not there.

Now in Dec 2010 I received a what’s app message in Chinese.
Started with something like “it’s an idiom from the Netherlands…”
followed by the same old stuff & who did/didn’t do the forwarding became rich/dead whatever …
By the end of the message it encouraged you to forward it because “…forwarding through the app is free~!”
and the mystery Anthony is now a South Afrian missionery…
unfortunately it still works in the Chinese community because some people do think it will be a lost(in certain aspect) if they don’t forward it out. Pathetic
